Want To Know More About Me?

I am a student of traditional Meitei music. My main instrument is the Pena, which I am learning from my maestro, Oja Marjit (Meishnam). I also taught myself how to play the Flute and the Dholak (I am better at Flute but not at Dholak yet). I started my music journey with the Harmonium, which I still play but it is not my primary instrument.
Since 2023, I have been focused on learning Khunung Eshei (our traditional folk songs). I love our culture (Meitei) and want to keep it alive. I am currently finishing my IGCSE exams (June 2026). After I finish school, I plan to go for university and later stay at Manipur to get a Diploma and a Master’s degree in Pena and Traditional Songs.
Thougal Jagoi is one of the most famous songs from the legendary story of the Khamba Thoibi: a timeless Manipuri epic of love, devotion, and dance. In the traditional performance, Thougal Jagoi is sung alongside the Dholak, Langden, and Flute, accompanying the sacred dance of Khamba and Thoibi. In this rendition, well I have performed a flute version of the Thougal Jagoi’s track, without any vocals nor percussion.

Playing the flute

This is a photo of me playing the flute at the Manipuri Cultural Complex. It was taken by my younger cousin, Shuvodeep Ningthoujam, right after our program with UNESCO on December 27th, 2025. Along with Shuvodeep, Nonglei, Korou Nganba, and Wanganba, we are all members of the Pena Kanglup in Bangladesh.

History behind the flute

I used to play the Harmonium and Tabla, and when I was gifted a set of flutes, I taught myself how to play it. Since I was already trained in harmonium and understood musical notes, I simply transferred the same notes to the flute, and it worked well. After that, I developed an interest in the flute too. Although it’s not my primary instrument, I still play it and really enjoy it. I usually play folk-style music on the flute.
